2017 is really proving to be Cardi B’s year as she wins big at the BET Hip Hop Awards.
Not only has the 24-year-old become the first female rapper to nab a solo no. 1 in the US since Lauryn Hill’s Doo Wop (That Thing) in 1998 – she also had an incredible night at the BET Hip Hop awards last night. Bodak Yellow became the surprise rap anthem of the summer, and its ascent to the top of the charts has seen the Love and Hip Hop: New York star praised by some of the biggest stars in rap – leaving many people asking ‘who is Cardi B exactly?’
The former stripper went home with major awards at the 2017 BET Hip-Hop Awards on the 6th, including the well-sought out Single of the Year and Best New Artist prizes. The rapper from the Bronx also won the Hustler of the Year during awards at The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theatre on October 6, 2017, in Miami Beach, Florida.
We aren’t surprised the On Fleek rapper won a gong for being a ‘hustler’ as we’ve praised her rags to riches story labelling her as hip hop’s very own fairy tale princess. Cardi is very aware she’s underestimated but that has not stopped her from working hard. She said: ‘They always think I’m just gonna be the stripper that’s never gonna make it nowhere. But you know what? It’s cool, because I’m the underdog.
Fast forward two years and she is rivaling the biggest pop star in the world for chart domination and sharing a moment with DJ Khaled’s son. Who doesn’t love meeting the infant executive producer Asahd at award shows?
Cardi went from escaping abuse at home, to stripping to make ends meet, to being a social media star, to arriving on one of the biggest reality TV shows. Her Instagram success led to her being cast in reality show Love And Hip Hop: New York. She appeared in two seasons before quitting to focus on her music career. And clearly, it worked for her.
