The Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF) President, Biggie Ganda Butale is set to face the party’s Disciplinary Commitee. This was resolved yesterday by the movement’s National Executive Committee.
According to BPF Publicity Secretary- Mr. Lawrence Ookeditse, the ‘fruitful’ meeting yesterday was a follow-up to the meeting held on the 10th this month which resolved that President Butale be asked to step aside for a month pending investigations into allegations against him.
“The BPF National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of 10th May 2021 which had adjourned to locate and inform President Butale of the decision to ask that he step aside for a month pending investigations into reports of sexual misconduct against his person continued this 20th May 2021. The fruitful NEC meeting considered the Butale matter as well as other party business and resolved as follows:
- That Butale be referred to the Disciplinary Committee of the party for his conduct since the complaint against him came to light. In particular, Clause 6.1.5 of the party constitution provides under membership duties and rights that members are to ‘desist from engaging in course of conduct prejudicial, or in any act grossly detrimental to the BPF’.
- That the team selected by the NEC to make an inquest on the matter and its effect on the party continue its work and report back to the NEC” the Press statement proclaimed.
These developments comes after Butale was accused by one Wangu Nfila of sexual harassment against herself. Nfila, a student at Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN) accused Butale of harassing her at his residence around Gaborone. The Student Representative Council (SRC) Presidential hopeful who is in her early twenties says she went to the Party President on matters of SRC campaign when the incident occured.
As Butale is set to appear before Disciplinary Commitee, he denied all that Wangu Nfila accused him of. Butale says she only hugged Nfila, and nothing more than that.
Meanwhile, most Social Media commentators are of the view that Butale is being framed so that he can be removed from the party presidency. Guma Moyo, Nonofo Molefhi, and Tshekedi Khama are some of the candidates who are alleged to be taking over.
