Botswana Unified Revenue Services (BURS) has introduced measures to expedite service and improve conditions for truck drivers at Tlokweng Border Post following increased congestion. The influx of cargo trucks was caused by the temporary closure of Martins Drift Border Post due to the overflowing Limpopo River.
Speaking in an interview today, BURS Principal Customs Officer, Ms. Mosadinyana Rakate, stated that Tlokweng Border Post is now processing an average of 480 trucks daily, nearly double the usual 240 trucks. To cope with the surge in traffic, BURS has implemented strategies to streamline operations and reduce delays.
Ms. Rakate highlighted that in addition to expediting clearance processes, authorities have also prioritized the welfare of truck drivers. Measures taken include the provision of portable water, mobile toilets, and free Wi-Fi to improve conditions for those waiting at the border.
The efforts aim to minimize disruptions to cross-border trade and ensure efficiency despite the unforeseen challenges posed by the closure of Martins Drift. Ms. Rakate reaffirmed BURS’s commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to maintain smooth operations and address any emerging issues at Botswana’s key border posts.
Truck drivers and industry stakeholders have welcomed the interventions, noting that they significantly improve the experience at the border while ensuring trade continuity. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and explore additional measures to further enhance efficiency at Tlokweng Border Post.
