David Cameron this morning announced that he will step down as Prime Minister in October this year following the ‘Brexit’ vote. The final result showed 17.4 million people voted Leave and 16.1 million people voted Remain. He said he could not be the ‘captain of the ship’ while the UK negotiated its exit from the EU as he announced he would be resigning as Prime Minister and Tory leader.
In delivering his speech, Cameron conceded that the country needs some stability before any major decisions can be taken. He said, “We’ve made a very clear decision to take a path and as such I think the country requires fresh leadership to take it this direction. I’ll do everything I can as Prime Minister to steady the ship in these coming weeks and months. But I not think it would be right for to try and be the captain that steers our country to its next destination.”
Mr Cameron said he would continue on as Prime Minister with his Cabinet for the next three months, but that he would aim to step down in October. Mr Cameron said he had spoken to the Queen and informed her of his decision, before concluding with an optimistic message for the UK , which he has led since 2010.
