Breast Cancer Awareness Month Launched
Journey of Hope, a non-profit organization comprising of a group of volunteers, who promote breast cancer awareness launched Breast Cancer awareness month yesterday in Molepolole as assigned by The National AIDS and Health Promotion (NAHPA) to disseminate information and raise awareness on Non-Communicable Diseases in Kweneng District.
The objective of the day was a signification of the beginning of breast cancer awareness month.
Speaking during the launch Kweneng District Management Coordinator Ms Josephine Mosimanewakgosi said the aim of breast cancer awareness campaign is to make the community aware of breast health services available in the country.
She further highlighted that the campaign aims to improve positive health seeking behavior among inhabitants of Kweneng adding that the community needs to understand that early detection of breast cancer with intervention can help improve health outcome hence reduce breast cancer related deaths.
“We are here to encourage the community to change their lifestyle to prevent breast cancer” .said Mosimanewakgosi.
For his part Director of National Aids Health Promotion Agency Mr Rapetse Rathumo encouraged men to support their women when fighting breast cancer. He stated that in Botswana Breast cancer is the 2nd most common cancer amongst women following cervical cancer and that there is no sufficient knowledge of the cause of breast cancer, therefore early detection is a cornerstone of breast cancer control.
He further said it is important to continue to empower communities and make sure that they know their bodies and should seek medical attention should they suspect changes in their body for early detection.
