Botswana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Phenyo Butale, has reaffirmed the new administration’s commitment to diversifying the country’s economy, with a particular emphasis on reducing dependence on mineral resources, especially diamonds. Speaking at a recent event attended by heads of missions, Dr. Butale highlighted the government’s efforts to shift towards other key sectors such as textiles, manufacturing, and tourism to create more job opportunities, particularly for the youth.

Dr. Butale stated that while diamonds have historically been a major driver of Botswana’s economy, the new administration is focused on building a more sustainable and diversified economic base. To this end, strategies are being developed to stimulate growth in these emerging sectors, with the goal of fostering job creation across different industries. The youth, in particular, have been identified as a priority group in this economic transformation, as the government seeks to provide them with the skills and opportunities needed for success in a rapidly changing global economy.

During his address, Dr. Butale also took the opportunity to engage with heads of missions, urging them to encourage their respective companies and investors to consider Botswana as a viable investment destination. By fostering international partnerships and attracting foreign investment, the government aims to stimulate economic growth and enhance the country’s global competitiveness.

In addition, Dr. Butale addressed the recent decision to withdraw from hosting the Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LDCs), explaining that the decision was made due to budgetary constraints. While Botswana had initially planned to host the conference, the government cited financial limitations as the primary reason for the withdrawal. Despite this, Botswana remains committed to supporting the broader agenda of landlocked developing countries and continues to work with international partners on matters of mutual interest.

The new administration’s focus on economic diversification marks a significant shift in Botswana’s development strategy, as the government works to reduce the country’s reliance on mineral resources and build a more robust, diversified economy. By expanding the textile, manufacturing, and tourism sectors, Botswana is positioning itself for long-term growth, with a focus on sustainable development and job creation for its citizens.
