The Ministry of Education has announced that the Kgatleng Regional Education Office has lost all its data following the recent floods that affected the region. The disaster has raised concerns about data security and management within the country’s education sector.
Speaking on the matter, Dr. Kgopotso Ramoroka, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Basic Education and Child Welfare, confirmed the data loss and highlighted the urgent need for a modernized system to prevent such incidents in the future. In response, the government has decided to fast-track the digitalization process across key educational and administrative offices in Botswana.
Dr. Ramoroka explained that this initiative will involve the use of online data backup solutions, including electronic cloud services, to ensure that all critical information is securely stored and easily retrievable. The shift to digital storage will enhance efficiency in record-keeping, improve accessibility to information, and safeguard crucial documents from physical damage caused by natural disasters.
The ministry has assured education stakeholders that it is taking immediate steps to recover and reconstruct lost data while also implementing strategies to prevent similar occurrences. The digitalization process is expected to improve education quality, enhance administrative operations, and create a more resilient education system that is less vulnerable to unforeseen disasters.
The floods in Kgatleng have served as a wake-up call for Botswana’s education sector, emphasizing the importance of modernizing data management systems to ensure continuity and efficiency in service delivery.
