The Botswana Wildlife Producers Association (BWPA), in collaboration with the Botswana Wildlife Training Institute, has successfully developed a professional hunting module now offered at the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST). This groundbreaking initiative is set to open new opportunities for local citizens in the field of wildlife and conservation.
Speaking on the development, BWPA Chief Executive Officer Isaac Theophilus emphasized that the module is designed to equip Batswana with the skills and qualifications necessary to enter the job market as certified professional hunters.
“Our goal is to create a pool of highly trained local professionals who can participate meaningfully in the sustainable hunting industry, which remains a vital part of Botswana’s wildlife economy,” said Theophilus.
He noted that the module has already been officially registered with the Botswana Human Resource Development Council (HRDC), ensuring that it meets national education and training standards.
The course is expected to cover a wide range of subjects including wildlife ecology, hunting ethics, firearm safety, tracking techniques, conservation laws, and sustainable use practices. By aligning academic training with industry needs, the module seeks to bridge the gap between conservation and employment, while promoting responsible wildlife utilization.
This development has been welcomed by stakeholders in the wildlife and tourism sectors, who view it as a step toward empowering citizens and promoting ethical and sustainable practices in the professional hunting industry.
Enrollment for the new module is set to begin soon, with hopes that it will attract aspiring conservationists, outdoor professionals, and those seeking to contribute to Botswana’s rich wildlife heritage.
