Statistics Botswana, in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands and Agriculture, is set to launch the country’s first-ever Digital Agricultural Census. The census, which will run from February 21st to December 2025, aims to gather critical data to enhance agricultural policies and improve food security.
Speaking at a press briefing, Deputy Statistician General at Statistics Botswana, Ms. Ketso Makhumalo, outlined the significance of the census. She revealed that it will be conducted in two phases, covering both the traditional and commercial agricultural sectors. This approach ensures that the data collected provides a comprehensive picture of Botswana’s agricultural landscape.
Makhumalo emphasized that the findings from the census will be instrumental in shaping policies aimed at boosting food security, reducing poverty, and promoting sustainable agricultural development. The use of digital technology in data collection is expected to enhance efficiency and accuracy, providing policymakers with real-time insights to drive decision-making.
The census marks a significant step forward for Botswana’s agricultural sector, as the government seeks to modernize farming practices and ensure long-term sustainability. By leveraging data-driven strategies, authorities hope to address key challenges in agriculture, improve resource allocation, and support farmers in increasing productivity.
As Botswana embarks on this historic initiative, stakeholders in the agricultural industry are encouraged to participate fully in the census to help shape a future of sustainable and resilient farming.
