The Botswana Vaccine Institute (BVI), in partnership with the Ministry of Lands and Agriculture, has announced a landmark 10-year agreement with Botswana International Agency for Animal Health (BIAH). This collaboration is expected to position Botswana as Africa’s leader in the production and supply of the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccine.
Speaking at a press briefing today, the Acting Minister of Lands and Agriculture, Dr. Edwin Dikoloti, highlighted the significance of this agreement. He emphasized that the deal not only strengthens Botswana’s role in the global fight against FMD but also solidifies the country’s reputation as a key player in animal health innovation.
“This new agreement sets Botswana apart in the global production and supply of the Foot and Mouth Disease vaccine. It is a major step in ensuring that Botswana leads Africa in addressing one of the most critical challenges facing livestock production,” Dr. Dikoloti said.
The agreement is expected to enhance the production capacity of the BVI, enabling it to meet growing demand across Africa and beyond. With FMD posing a significant threat to livestock health and livelihoods, particularly in agricultural economies, this partnership marks a significant step toward combating the disease.
BVI has long been at the forefront of vaccine development in the region, and this new deal further underscores its commitment to excellence and innovation. The partnership with BIAH will also create opportunities for knowledge exchange, technological advancement, and job creation within Botswana’s agricultural sector.
As Botswana solidifies its position as a leader in animal health, the 10-year agreement is poised to have a lasting impact on the continent, ensuring greater access to FMD vaccines and safeguarding livestock-dependent communities.
