The City of Francistown was a hub of activity this morning as multitudes from across Botswana gathered to celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Among the attendees was the Assistant Minister for State President, Honourable Maipelo B. Mophuting, who joined the nation in marking this significant occasion.

The annual commemoration aims to promote a deeper understanding of disability issues, advocate for the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities, and mobilize support for their well-being. This year’s event provided a platform for reflection on the latest advancements in disability policy and legislation.

A key highlight of this year’s celebration was the Government of Botswana’s unveiling of its first-ever disability-specific legislation, the Persons with Disability Act of 2024. The Act represents a monumental step forward in advancing the rights of persons with disabilities, seeking to remove barriers that hinder their active participation in various sectors of the economy.

Honourable Mophuting emphasized the government’s commitment to creating an inclusive society where all citizens can thrive. “This Act marks a new chapter in our journey to ensure that persons with disabilities are not left behind. It is a call to action for all sectors to foster inclusivity and equality,” she said.

The event also featured discussions on disability rights, awareness campaigns, and cultural performances, symbolizing the resilience and contributions of persons with disabilities to society.

As Botswana celebrates this day, it reaffirms its dedication to the global movement for inclusivity and equality, ensuring that the voices of persons with disabilities are heard and their potential fully realized.
