Botswana Athletics Association To Hold First Evening Athletics Event Today
The Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) will kick-start their year with a first evening track and field event at the National Stadium this evening.
BAA spokesperson, Ipolokeng Ramatshaba told the media that it is the first time that they are having an evening event.
“We are having an evening event due to the extreme heat that we are currently experiencing,” he said.
Ramatshaba said some International Association of Athletics Federations
(IAAF) events are held in the evening. He said as such, BAA has decided to get athletes used to evening conditions. He said the Thursday series will be for three hours, starting at 6pm.
He said they will strictly adhere to the schedule and expect to finish on time, in line with international practice.
“They are aware that this is competition time. They went for a brief festive break but now it is back to business,” Ramatshaba said.
Meanwhile, he said the national team preparing for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games is in camp. He said there is a possibility that more athletes will qualify for the Commonwealth Games at tomorrow’s meet.
The Commonwealth Games are scheduled for April 4 to 15, 2018.
The events which are included in the night meet are 1,500m (women), 800m (men and women), and high jump for both men and women.
