One of the main reasons why people travel to Africa is to see the Big Five which are; the African lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, African leopard, and the White/Black rhinoceros. However, one of the most frequently asked questions is, which destination offers the best chance to see all five species? We do hold our own when it comes to wildlife, and it comes as no surprise that travel experts see us in both position 2 and 3 respectively.
Okavango Delta.
Botswana’s Okavango Delta remains the all-time favorite big game viewing area in Southern Africa. In addition to 4×4 game drives, it also offers the unique opportunity to view wildlife from the water by making use of the floodplains that surround the lodges and camps. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s a true wilderness that changes with seasonal flooding.
Savuti Marsh.
Birds, ellies and antelope are all drawn to the waterholes and wetlands. So, too, are predators. Leopards stalk prey on the muddy marsh banks, lions have been known to take down elephants here, packs of wild dog and hyena are regularly seen feasting on kills and cheetahs and jackals glide beneath the long grass, looking for opportunity.
