The Botswana Sectors of Educators Trade Union (BOSETU) has expressed disappointment over President Duma Boko’s State of the Nation Address, particularly regarding the lack of mention on the resumption of the Public Service Bargaining Council (PSBC).
In a response to the President’s maiden address delivered yesterday, BOSETU’s Secretary General, Tobokani Rari, emphasized that President Boko failed to provide any timeline or concrete plans for the revival of the PSBC, which is crucial for addressing labor issues within the public sector. According to Rari, the union had hoped that the President would prioritize discussions on labor rights, especially given the current challenges faced by public servants.
Rari pointed out that while President Boko spoke extensively about a transformation agenda, there was a notable absence of details regarding the future of the public service and the specific measures the government plans to take to improve the working conditions of public sector employees. The union had expected more clarity on how labor concerns would be addressed, and how the government intends to resolve ongoing disputes between workers and employers.
BOSETU has been a vocal advocate for the rights of educators and other public servants, pushing for reforms that will improve working conditions, job security, and overall public service delivery. The union’s disappointment highlights the growing gap between the expectations of workers and the government’s focus on broader national issues.
As the country moves forward under President Boko’s leadership, it remains to be seen how these unresolved labor issues will be addressed and whether the government will take proactive steps to revive the PSBC and engage in meaningful dialogue with public sector unions.
