The Chairperson of Bobirwa Anti-Stock Theft, Kgosi Mooketsi, has shared the successful initiatives implemented to curb livestock theft in the Bobirwa area. Speaking on the matter, Kgosi Gabana highlighted that the district has established 21 Mophato (traditional regiments) under the leadership and guidance of Dikgosi, a move that has significantly reduced stock theft in the region.

According to Kgosi Gabana, the formation of these Anti-Stock Theft Mophato has played a crucial role in monitoring and protecting livestock, ensuring that stolen animals are traced and recovered efficiently. He further emphasized the importance of community involvement in addressing the issue, noting that the success of these initiatives is largely due to the commitment of local leaders and farmers.

Recognizing that stock theft is a cross-border issue, Bobirwa has also formed collaborations with Zimbabwe and South Africa to combat the crime collectively. Through these partnerships, information-sharing and coordinated operations have been strengthened, leading to more effective prevention and response efforts.

Kgosi Gabana urged other villages and districts across Botswana to benchmark from Bobirwa’s strategy by forming their own Mophato. He stressed that stock theft remains a widespread challenge in the country and called for a united effort to tackle it.

The success of Bobirwa’s initiatives highlights the impact of community-led interventions and regional cooperation in addressing stock theft and ensuring the protection of farmers’ livelihoods.
