A group of enterprising residents near Shakawe has come together to form the Xhaoga Mokoro Society, a community-driven initiative that provides mokoro (traditional canoe) experiences to international tourists along the scenic Xhaoga River. The society is built on the vision of showcasing Botswana’s natural beauty and traditional ways of life through eco-friendly river excursions.
According to one of the society’s directors, Mr. Basimilwe Bojosi, their main clients are international tourists who are referred through partnerships with lodges based in Shakawe and Samochima. These collaborations have been vital in connecting the Xhaoga Mokoro Society with the global tourism market, offering visitors an authentic and tranquil journey through the river’s winding channels and rich birdlife.
“The mokoro experience offers tourists a chance to connect with nature in a quiet, intimate setting that reflects the essence of the Okavango region,” said Mr. Bojosi. “It’s not just about the ride—it’s about the stories, the culture, and the peacefulness of the water.”
The society, however, has set its sights on expansion. Mr. Bojosi revealed that they are eager to tap into the local tourism market, hoping to attract more Batswana to explore the beauty of their own country through these guided river trips. The group plans to offer educational tours, recreational outings, and cultural experiences to domestic visitors in the near future.
Despite the progress and vision, the Xhaoga Mokoro Society faces a significant logistical challenge—the lack of an off-road vehicle. The route between Xhaoga and the river spans about 4.5 kilometers of sandy terrain, making it difficult to transport canoes and tourists without proper transportation.
“This is our biggest hurdle right now,” Mr. Bojosi explained. “We have the people, the skill, and the passion. What we need is the means to reliably reach the river with our equipment and clients.”
The society is actively seeking support, whether through government channels, NGOs, or private partnerships, to acquire a vehicle that can navigate the difficult terrain and help them grow their operations.
With its commitment to cultural preservation, eco-tourism, and community empowerment, the Xhaoga Mokoro Society stands as a shining example of grassroots innovation in Botswana’s tourism sector. With the right support, the initiative could grow into a prominent attraction in the northwest, contributing to both local livelihoods and the country’s tourism economy.
