Local leaders in Botswana’s North East region have emphasized the need for impactful and meaningful development projects as part of the upcoming National Development Plan 12 (NDP 12). This sentiment was shared during regional consultations organized by the National Planning Commission in preparation for the next phase of the country’s development roadmap.

During the discussions, participants unanimously agreed that development initiatives should not only meet immediate needs but also provide lasting value to communities. The leaders called for strategic planning that clearly demonstrates a shift in government priorities and delivers visible progress on the ground.

Some participants urged that future programs be designed in a way that reflects real transformation—both in policy direction and outcomes—so that citizens can see and feel the difference. They advocated for inclusive development that benefits people in both urban and rural areas, emphasizing equity in the distribution of national resources.

The consultations also revealed a variety of ideas from leaders on how to best develop their respective regions. These ranged from infrastructure upgrades and youth empowerment to agricultural development and improved service delivery. Each contribution aimed to align local aspirations with the broader goals of national progress.

According to officials from the National Planning Commission, NDP 12 is scheduled to begin on November 1 and will run until March 31, 2029. The current consultations are part of an extensive nationwide exercise to gather input from citizens and stakeholders to ensure the plan is inclusive, responsive, and tailored to the country’s evolving needs.

As Botswana prepares to enter this new development chapter, the feedback from the North East region highlights the desire for a results-driven approach that brings about tangible improvements in people’s lives. The National Planning Commission is expected to incorporate these perspectives into the final draft of NDP 12, setting the tone for a more inclusive and transformative national agenda.
