The Minister of Labour and Home Affairs, Major General (Rtd) Pius Mokgware, has praised Boitekanelo College for its bold move in leading the way among educational institutions by implementing a P4000.00 per month living wage for its employees. Speaking at the college’s campus in Tlokweng yesterday, Minister Mokgware commended the institution for its commitment to fair remuneration and social equity.
“The Government is proud of you, Boitekanelo College,” he stated, highlighting the college’s exemplary role in supporting national efforts to close the income gap between the rich and the poor. He reiterated that the living wage initiative aligns with the government’s broader mission to promote dignity and economic justice for all workers.
Boitekanelo College’s new wage policy will directly benefit about 40 employees, most of whom work as cleaners and grounds personnel. The move marks a significant step forward in recognising and uplifting the often-overlooked members of the academic workforce.
College Founder and President, Dr Tiro Mampane, emphasized the institution’s commitment to inclusivity and national development. “We honour our workforce—especially those who serve behind the scenes. This decision reflects our alignment with Botswana’s national aspirations,” he said.
Tlokweng Member of Parliament, Hon. Phenyo Segokgo, gave a heartfelt vote of thanks, stating, “This is the Botswana we promised. This is the Botswana we are making.” He also lauded Boitekanelo College for setting the standard in the education sector by introducing the P4000.00 living wage.
Boitekanelo’s initiative has not only garnered government praise but also sparked hope for broader adoption of living wage policies across other institutions in the country.
