Member of Parliament for Gaborone Central, Dr. Phenyo Butale, has urged the government to establish regulations that prevent Deputy Sheriffs from exploiting individuals for personal financial gain.

Speaking in Parliament yesterday, Dr. Butale expressed concern over the absence of clear regulations, which he said allows some Deputy Sheriffs to take advantage of individuals, particularly those entangled in legal matters. He warned that this lack of oversight creates opportunities for harassment and unethical practices.

“Sheriffs have developed a tendency of invading people and demanding payments at their convenience as a way of gaining money unfairly,” he stated.

Dr. Butale emphasized the need for reforms to ensure that Deputy Sheriffs operate within ethical and legal boundaries. His call reflects growing concerns about fairness and accountability in debt collection and legal enforcement practices in Botswana.
