UNICEF has committed P700,000 to support the Botswana government’s efforts in delivering child-centered interventions in response to the ongoing flooding crisis. This financial assistance aims to mitigate the impact of the floods on vulnerable children and families in affected communities.

According to UNICEF Representative Joan Matji, the organization will collaborate with the Botswana Red Cross Society to provide essential aid. This includes distributing hygiene kits, safe drinking water, and critical health supplies such as Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) to prevent dehydration-related illnesses. UNICEF will also facilitate access to healthcare services and implement child safeguarding measures within evacuation centers to ensure the well-being of displaced children.

Flooding has disrupted daily life in several areas, posing serious health and safety risks, particularly for children. The intervention by UNICEF aligns with its global mandate to protect children’s rights and provide emergency assistance during humanitarian crises.

The Botswana government has been working to manage the situation, with emergency response teams deployed to assist affected communities. UNICEF’s contribution will complement these efforts by addressing urgent needs and promoting a safe environment for children amid the crisis.

With the support of international partners like UNICEF, Botswana continues to strengthen its disaster response mechanisms to safeguard the most vulnerable members of society.
