The Government of Botswana has announced plans to allocate a budget for the upgrade and construction of new stadiums that meet the Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards. This move aims to enhance the country’s sports infrastructure, providing modern and high-quality facilities for local and international competitions.
Minister of Youth, Gender, Sport, and Culture, Jacob Kelebeng, confirmed that the government is actively renovating various sports facilities across the country. Among the key projects is the roofing of the Obedi Itani Chilume Stadium in Francistown, which is set to improve the stadium’s usability in all weather conditions.
Additionally, comprehensive renovations are planned for several other venues, including the University of Botswana Sports Complex, Lobatse Stadium, Gantsi Sports Complex, Molepolole, Maun, Masunga, and Serowe Sports Complex. These upgrades are expected to improve the quality of playing surfaces, seating arrangements, and overall stadium infrastructure to align with CAF requirements.
The initiative reflects Botswana’s commitment to developing sports and positioning itself as a competitive destination for regional and international tournaments. By modernizing its stadiums, the country aims to boost local football, attract international events, and create better opportunities for athletes and fans.
With these improvements, Botswana’s sporting landscape is set to benefit from world-class facilities, paving the way for greater participation in CAF-sanctioned events and enhancing the country’s reputation in the global sports community.
