This year marks two decades of existence for Son of the Soil (SOTS), one of Botswana’s most beloved and longest-running cultural and heritage festivals. To commemorate this milestone, a grand celebration is set to take place on February 22 at Boetelo Sunvalley Resort in Notwane.
Launched in 2005 by the Bana ba Mmala Trust, SOTS has become a cornerstone of Botswana’s cultural calendar, bringing together people from across the country and neighboring nations. Over the years, the festival has provided a unique platform for celebrating and preserving Botswana’s rich cultural heritage while engaging the youth with activities that connect them to their roots.
“We are excited and thrilled to have come this far, celebrating our culture with the full support of Batswana. It has not been a smooth ride, though, given that events are costly to put together and some die along the way, but we have persevered,” said SOTS event producer, Sydney ‘BoogieSyd’ Nzala.
The 20th anniversary celebration, themed Ngwao, Segarona. Re Ipela Goya Goile (Our Culture, Our Pride. We Celebrate How Far We’ve Come), promises a vibrant lineup of events and performances.
Highlights of the Celebration
The festivities will kick off on Friday, February 21, with the return of the popular Metswaiso Chillas—an evening dedicated to folk storytelling, singing, poetry, and traditional dance.
The main event on Saturday, February 22, will showcase a diverse array of cultural activities, including traditional Setswana games like mhele, diketo, and koi. A fan favorite, the battle of dikhwaere (choir competitions) between northern and southern choirs, will also make a comeback, promising spirited performances.
The evening’s entertainment lineup includes iconic artists such as Matsieng, Captain Dira, Dikakapa, Culture Spears, Ncaa’Ncaase Traditional Group, and Solly Sebotso. Adding a modern flair to the event will be afro-commercial acts like Juu Matere, George Swabi, and international stars Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Bongo Maffin from South Africa.
To wrap up the celebrations, Sunday, February 23, will feature an Afro-Soul Melodic event headlined by artists such as Bhudaza, Shanti Lo, Mpho Sebina, and Lister Boleseng.
More Than Just Entertainment
In addition to performances, the festival will feature stalls showcasing local crafts, providing attendees with the opportunity to purchase unique items and learn more about Botswana’s talent and artistry.
As SOTS celebrates this remarkable milestone, it remains a symbol of unity, culture, and pride for Botswana. With an ever-growing following, the festival continues to connect generations and preserve the nation’s cultural legacy.
