The Botswana Congress Party (BCP) has called on the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) government to lift the veil of secrecy surrounding the recently concluded agreement between the Botswana government and diamond mining giant De Beers. The BCP argues that the confidentiality surrounding the deal raises questions about transparency and accountability in managing the nation’s most significant natural resource.

BCP spokespersons criticized the lack of detailed information provided to the public regarding the terms of the agreement. “As custodians of Botswana’s diamonds, the government has a duty to ensure that citizens are fully informed about deals that impact the nation’s economy. This secrecy undermines trust and excludes Batswana from understanding the benefits and implications of such a pivotal agreement,” said the party in a statement.

The BCP further asserted that the UDC government should not claim sole credit for the agreement, insisting that past administrations laid the groundwork for Botswana’s partnership with De Beers. “DON’T CLAIM THE GLORY WE PAVED WAY FOR YOU,” the party said, pointing out that much of the framework for Botswana’s diamond success story was established during earlier years of governance, particularly under Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) administrations.

BDP Responds to De Beers Agreement

Meanwhile, the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has weighed in on the agreement, framing it as a continuation of the policies and strategies they initiated during their tenure. The BDP dismissed the UDC government’s attempts to position the deal as a standalone achievement, arguing that it is built on decades of prudent negotiations and foresight under BDP leadership.

“We welcome the continuation of efforts to secure Botswana’s diamond wealth, but let it be known that the foundation of this agreement is a product of the BDP’s vision and dedication to ensuring that the country’s diamonds benefit all Batswana,” a senior BDP official stated.

The BDP also raised concerns about the lack of transparency in the agreement, aligning somewhat with the BCP’s stance. They urged the government to disclose key terms of the deal to reassure citizens that Botswana’s interests have been safeguarded.

The Need for Transparency

The agreement between the Botswana government and De Beers has sparked widespread interest and debate, as it will shape the trajectory of Botswana’s diamond industry for years to come. Civil society groups and opposition parties continue to call for greater transparency, emphasizing that diamonds are a national resource that should benefit every citizen.

While the UDC government celebrates the agreement as a victory, both the BCP and BDP have stressed the importance of ensuring that such deals are conducted openly and inclusively to protect Botswana’s legacy as a global leader in diamond governance. The public now awaits further details to determine how this agreement will impact the economy and future generations.
