Assistant Minister for State President, Honorable Maipelo Mophuting, is leading Botswana’s delegation at the ongoing Africa Centre for Strategic Studies National Security Strategy Implementation and Rule of Law Roundtable in Lusaka, Zambia. The high-level meeting focuses on equipping African nations with the tools and frameworks necessary to strengthen their national security strategies and governance systems in an increasingly complex global landscape.

Speaking during the roundtable, Mophuting highlighted the importance of National Security Strategy Development (NSSD) in addressing Africa’s security challenges. “According to the Africa Centre for Strategic Studies, NSSD in Africa is a critical process that enables African countries to craft comprehensive policies to protect their national interests and ensure the safety and stability of our populations,” she said.

Mophuting reaffirmed Botswana’s commitment to these principles, emphasizing the alignment with President Advocate Duma Boko’s mission to safeguard Botswana’s national interests. She outlined the primary goals of Botswana’s National Security Strategy: protecting the lives and safety of Batswana, maintaining the sovereignty of the country along with its values, institutions, and territory, and fostering the prosperity of the nation and its people.

The Assistant Minister explained that her participation in the Lusaka roundtable was focused on benchmarking best practices and deepening Botswana’s understanding of inter-ministerial coordination in the implementation of National Security Strategies (NSS). “It is against this backdrop that I’m leading a strong defense and security detail in Lusaka to facilitate inter-ministerial coordination and gain insights into the effective implementation of NSS,” Mophuting said.

The roundtable brings together key stakeholders from across Africa, including policymakers, defense and security experts, and representatives from international organizations, to share knowledge and collaborate on building resilient national security frameworks. The discussions also cover the role of the rule of law in promoting stability, good governance, and sustainable development.

Honorable Mophuting and her delegation are set to return to Botswana on Saturday, 8th February 2025, bringing home valuable insights to enhance the country’s strategic approach to national security. The outcomes of this engagement are expected to further strengthen Botswana’s position as a model for peace and stability in the region.
