Gaborone’s newly elected Mayor, Oarabile Motlaleng, has announced plans to request permission from the Minister of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Ketlhalefile Motshegwa, to assemble a team of his choosing for the city’s leadership. This move comes after Motlaleng expressed concerns over the competence and commitment of some of the existing staff during a meet-and-greet session with the media held at Cresta President Hotel on Thursday morning.
Motlaleng, who took office with a strong vision for Gaborone’s prosperity, shared his intention to request approval to handpick a team that aligns with his goals for the city. “I’m going to request Hon. Motshegwa to give the go-ahead for me to select my own team, people I trust and who share the same vision for our city’s prosperity,” Motlaleng said. “Some of the people I currently work with don’t align with my vision, and I want to bring in individuals who are hungry to see Gaborone thrive.”
The Mayor’s statement signals a desire for fresh perspectives and more effective leadership at the Gaborone City Council. According to Motlaleng, the current team does not fully share his commitment to the city’s progress, and he aims to introduce individuals who are motivated and capable of driving change and development.
When asked by the media about potential concerns of nepotism, Motlaleng was quick to clarify that his plan is not about hiring friends or family members. Instead, he emphasized that his goal is to bring in fresh talent to the city council—individuals who are not only qualified but also passionate about contributing to Gaborone’s future. “This is not about hiring people I know personally, but about selecting individuals with the right skills, passion, and vision to move Gaborone forward,” he explained.
Motlaleng’s statement has generated considerable attention, especially regarding his approach to leadership and governance. As Gaborone’s new mayor, he is keen to ensure that the city council functions at its best, with a team that shares his aspirations for a prosperous future.
With the Mayor seeking approval from the Minister to assemble his team, it remains to be seen how this move will impact the city’s administration and whether it will lead to a revitalized and more efficient local government. The request for a new team is an important step in Motlaleng’s efforts to shape Gaborone into a city that aligns with his ambitious vision for growth, development, and prosperity.
