This festive season promises to be different as Botswana’s leadership steps out of their offices to support the men and women tasked with ensuring a peaceful and secure holiday period. The Minister for State President, Honourable Moeti Caesar Mohwasa, is leading a high-profile delegation to engage with security personnel and reinforce the government’s commitment to their welfare.
The delegation, which includes the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) Commander Lieutenant General Placid Segokgo, Commissioner of Police Dinah Marathe, and Director of Traffic Senior Assistant Commissioner Pilane Sebegi, began their tour on December 23, 2024, at Makalamabedi Veterinary Gate in the North West region.
Government Commitment to Security Personnel
Speaking to the operatives at Makalamabedi, Minister Mohwasa expressed gratitude for their dedication to safeguarding lives and property, often at great personal risk. He assured them that the government is determined to improve their working conditions, including logistical and operational support.
“I want to thank you all for your hard work in ensuring the safety and security of our citizens. I am here today to assure you that the Government is fully committed to supporting your work,” said Mohwasa.
The Minister urged the operatives to remain vigilant and uphold the rule of law, especially during this busy festive period.
Addressing Gender-Based Violence (GBV)
Highlighting the growing concern of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Honourable Mohwasa called for a proactive approach in tackling this critical issue. He described GBV as a severe violation of human rights that undermines dignity and equality, urging security personnel to treat the matter with urgency and sensitivity.
Challenges and Achievements at Makalamabedi Gate
Welcoming the delegation, Divisional Commander North West, Senior Assistant Commissioner Cyprian Magalela, provided insights into the operations at Makalamabedi Gate. He explained that the area experiences high traffic, with vehicles and people traveling to Maun, either as tourists or in transit to other destinations.
Magalela noted that despite the challenges, including the temporary nature of their operational base, the team has consistently intercepted and arrested perpetrators of various crimes. He expressed hope for the establishment of permanent structures to enhance efficiency.
North West District Commissioner Thabang Waloka also attended the meeting, showing local leadership’s support for the security efforts.
Festive Wishes from the Minister
As the visit concluded, Honourable Mohwasa extended his heartfelt festive greetings to the security personnel and their families, wishing them a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.
The tour underscores the government’s commitment to fostering morale and ensuring that Botswana’s security forces are equipped and motivated to deliver a safe and secure festive season for all citizens and visitors.
