President Duma Boko has issued a stern warning to armed criminals, cautioning them against resorting to violence. Speaking during a recent address, Boko emphasized that the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) is well-prepared and trained to respond decisively to any violent acts, should the need arise.

“The BDF is highly trained in the use of ammunition and knows precisely when to apply it to neutralize threats. Let me warn criminals that if you’re caught in the act of crime, surrender when intercepted. Don’t attempt to use force, as that would trigger a military response if necessary,” he said.

Boko further highlighted that the military operates under strict guidelines, with a detailed manual that dictates when and how to use force to eliminate threats. He urged criminals to avoid armed acts, particularly in areas under the surveillance of the military and police forces.

“They [the military and police] are equipped and trained to protect the public and are fully capable of responding to armed crime. Criminals should not attempt to challenge them with violence,” Boko added.

Historically, violent crime responses in Botswana have been handled primarily by the Botswana Police Service, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and the Directorate on Intelligence and Security (DIS). However, Boko’s remarks signal a shift towards increased involvement of the BDF in maintaining law and order.

The president’s address serves as a clear message to those considering violent criminal acts that the government is prepared to use all available resources to ensure public safety.
