Today in Mochudi, the Government of Botswana, in collaboration with UNICEF Botswana, hosted a remarkable “Children’s Kgotla Takeover” to commemorate World Children’s Day. The event highlighted the theme for the 2024 celebration: Inclusive and Quality Education. This theme aligns with the African Union’s declaration to dedicate 2024 to education, under the banner: “Educate an African Fit for the 21st Century: Building Resilient Education Systems for Increased Access to Inclusive, Lifelong, Quality, and Relevant Learning in Africa.”
The Children’s Kgotla Takeover offered a unique platform for young voices to engage with decision-makers, promoting children’s active participation while strengthening their understanding of Botswana’s rich cultural heritage.
Minister Reaffirms Commitment to Children’s Rights
Honourable Nono Kgafela-Mokoka, Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education, addressed the gathering, reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to safeguarding children’s rights. She emphasized the importance of creating safe and supportive environments for children to thrive.
“We must let children be children, and their curriculum should be reviewed to ensure it is age-appropriate,” the Minister stated. She highlighted the government’s dedication to providing access to quality education through child-friendly schools that cater to the developmental needs of every learner.
Celebrating the Voices of Children
The Minister commended the children for their enthusiastic participation, assuring them that their voices are valued. “Your concerns are being considered by the Ministry and all relevant stakeholders,” she said, emphasizing the importance of listening to children as part of shaping policies that impact their future.
A Step Towards Inclusive Education
The event underscored Botswana’s commitment to fostering an inclusive, quality education system that empowers children to succeed in the 21st century. Through initiatives like the Children’s Kgotla Takeover, the government continues to champion the rights and welfare of children, ensuring they have the tools and opportunities to build a brighter future.
