The Commissioner of Police, Dinah Marathe, has lauded the strong bilateral ties between Botswana and the United States, emphasizing the robust security cooperation that has significantly enhanced the Botswana Police Service (BPS). Commissioner Marathe made these remarks yesterday, November 27, 2024, during a courtesy call by the United States Ambassador to Botswana, His Excellency Howard A. Van Vranken, in Gaborone.
U.S. Support Strengthens BPS Capabilities
Commissioner Marathe highlighted the critical support provided by U.S. security agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), Homeland Security, and the International Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA). She noted that these agencies have delivered specialized training programs and donated technical equipment, significantly bolstering the BPS’s operational capacity.
Among the notable contributions is the 2005 U.S. donation of the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). Botswana became the first African country to install this state-of-the-art system, which has since played a pivotal role in managing the National DNA Database. Commissioner Marathe explained that CODIS has been instrumental in solving violent crimes, resolving cold cases, and providing humanitarian assistance. She noted that the system has helped BPS close a substantial number of violent crime cases over the years.
Commitment to Joint Efforts
Commissioner Marathe also expressed gratitude for the U.S. Government’s continued commitment under the Joint Agreement establishing ILEA Gaborone, a regional hub for law enforcement training. She reaffirmed BPS’s dedication to maintaining safety and security, particularly for diplomats, and stressed the importance of strategic partnerships in addressing evolving security challenges.
She outlined the BPS’s focus areas, which include tackling violent crimes such as robbery, home invasions, rape, and murder, as well as addressing the pressing issues of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and drug abuse among the youth. These community threats, she said, require joint strategies and sustained collaboration.
Ambassador Van Vranken’s Commendation
U.S. Ambassador Van Vranken commended the BPS for its professionalism and commitment, particularly during Botswana’s recent elections. He praised the police service for maintaining public safety and security, contributing to Botswana’s reputation as a safe and peaceful nation. The Ambassador reiterated the U.S. Government’s continued support for BPS and its efforts to enhance security and public safety.
Strengthening Security and Bilateral Ties
The meeting underscored the enduring partnership between Botswana and the United States in promoting security and peace. Through collaborative initiatives and the sharing of resources and expertise, the two nations continue to work together to address pressing security challenges and ensure the safety of their citizens.
