Minister Moeti Mohwasa Meets Botswana Police Senior Management
The Minister for State President, Honourable Moeti Mohwasa, held his first interaction with the senior management of the Botswana Police Service (BPS) following his recent appointment. The meeting served as a platform to acknowledge the critical role played by the BPS in ensuring free and fair elections and maintaining safety and security across the nation.
Commitment to Improved Conditions
Hon. Mohwasa expressed his gratitude to the BPS for their unwavering commitment to public safety. He assured officers that the new government is aware of their challenges and is committed to improving their working conditions. “We understand the importance of your service to the nation and pledge to address your conditions of service,” he said.
The Minister also promised to increase resources for the BPS to enhance their ability to fulfill their mandate effectively. He encouraged the force to embrace technology, particularly in combating stock theft, to boost detection rates and operational efficiency.
Commissioner’s Response
Commissioner of Police Dinah Marathe congratulated the Minister on his appointment and reaffirmed the BPS’s commitment to supporting his vision. “We stand ready to create a safe and secure environment essential for peace, unity, and economic growth,” she said.
However, Commissioner Marathe also highlighted key challenges faced by the BPS, including a shortage of staff housing, inadequate transportation, and limited budgets. She noted that these issues adversely affect service delivery and staff morale, calling for urgent attention to ensure the BPS continues to excel.
Renewed Commitment to Excellence
Deputy Commissioner for Crime Investigations, Mr. Busang Lesola, delivered the vote of thanks, pledging that the BPS would not falter in its responsibilities. “We will continue to stamp our authority as one of the best-performing police services locally and internationally,” he stated.
Mr. Lesola also emphasized the importance of prioritizing human rights in all aspects of service delivery, ensuring that the BPS maintains its reputation as a progressive and people-centered organization.
A Forward-Looking Partnership
This inaugural engagement marks the beginning of a strengthened partnership between the BPS and the new administration. With promises of better resources and a commitment to addressing challenges, the Minister’s interaction signals a shared vision for a safer Botswana, driven by innovation, unity, and resilience.
