The Speaker of the National Assembly of Botswana, Honourable Phandu T. C. Skelemani, PH. MP, will represent Botswana at the 149th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly and related meetings in Geneva, Switzerland, from October 13th to 17th, 2024.
During this significant assembly, the Honourable Speaker, accompanied by a delegation, will participate in various key events, including the IPU General Assembly, the meetings of the Governing Council, and the Committee on Peace and International Security and Sustainable Development. These gatherings aim to address pressing global issues and promote collaboration among member parliaments.
This year’s IPU Assembly centers around the theme “Harnessing Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) for a More Peaceful and Sustainable Future.” The General Debate will provide a platform for delegates to exchange views, deliberate on the overarching theme, and galvanize parliamentary action. Among the topics of discussion will be the impact of artificial intelligence on democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, a subject taken up by the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights. Resolutions will be adopted addressing these critical issues, as well as an emergency item raised by member parliaments.
In addition to the assembly, the Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments will convene alongside the 149th IPU Assembly. This meeting, attended by Clerks of Parliaments, will focus on sharing best practices regarding parliamentary processes and procedures, fostering knowledge exchange among parliamentary staff.
The Honourable Speaker is accompanied by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Ms. Barbara N. Dithapo. The delegation is set to depart on Thursday, October 10th, 2024, and will return on Saturday, October 19th, 2024.
The participation of Botswana in the 149th IPU Assembly underscores the country’s commitment to global dialogue and cooperation in addressing critical issues affecting peace, democracy, and sustainable development.
