Government Continues to Deliver on Its National Pledges

His Excellency President Dr. Mokgweetsi Masisi says government continues to deliver on their national pledges towards achieving energy security. Speaking during the 100MW Jwaneng Solar PV Plant Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) signing ceremony in Jwaneng today, President Masisi said the signing is a key milestone in energy transition and also a political promise they made to Batswana in 2019.

The initiative is in line with Botswana’s Energy Policy goal of providing affordable, reliable and adequate supply of energy for sustainable development, as well as improving access to and efficient use of energy resources.

He said to ensure minimal participation of Batswana in energy transformation, government has reserved an investment in small scale Solar PV Projects to citizen owned company, a minimum of 40% citizen shareholding in utility scale Solar PV projects.

President Masisi said to date, 460 out of 565 villages in Botswana have been electrified, which is 81% of rural electrification.

The Signing of the Power Purchase Agreement was between Botswana Power Corporation and an Independent Power Producer (IPP) Sinotswana Green Energy, a Chinese Independent Power Producer (IPP) set up under the laws of Botswana. The project will be constructed in Jwaneng.
