GHANZI STRATEGIC FUEL RESERVES DEPOT KICKS OFF
Today the Acting President of the Republic of Botswana Mr. Slumber Tsogwane officiated the Ghanzi groundbreaking Ceremony in Chobokwane to start the Construction of the Ghanzi Strategic Fuel Reserves Depot which will work as part of improving the country’s capacity for energy security. The project is led by Botswana Oil Limited.
Speaking at the ceremony, His Honor the Vice President explained the significance of this milestone as commitment and resilience by Botswana Oil to deliver on their mandate in the aspirations of our National Vision 2036 which seeks to achieve prosperity for all, in the context of transitioning to a high-income economic status.
He stated that Sustainable Environment Pillar recognizes Energy Security as one of the critical components essential for socio-economic development, and further explained that this project will enhance fuel availability, affordability, and reliability.
His Honor the Vice President who is also the Acting President explained that Botswana is completely reliant on imports of refined petroleum products from neighboring countries which poses a high risk to the security of fuel supply. He also acknowledged that this building of a strategic fuel reserve in such a key location is ideal for job security, creating additional fuel and lubricants storage capacity hence diversifying the petroleum supply route, through the use of the Namibian port of Walvis-Bay, where Botswana has secured a dry-port facility
