Morroco ask for Botswana’s support
This afternoon, the President of the Republic of Botswana, His Excellency Dr Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi received a Special Envoy of the King of Morocco His Majesty Mohammed VI on a courtesy call at the Office of the President.
The Envoy, led by the Moroccan Minister of National Education and Sports Mr Chakib Benmoussa, is in the country at the instruction of the King of Morocco to deliver a message of gratitude and regards to the President and the people of Botswana. The Moroccan envoy is also in Botswana as part of their continent tour to solicit support on their bid to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations men’s finals.
In receiving the envoy, President Dr Masisi paid homage to the King of Morocco and cited that the two countries established bilateral relations in 2005. President Dr Masisi mentioned that the two countries share a lot of commonalities and areas of interest and have enjoyed cordial relations since the signing of the agreement. President Dr Masisi assured the envoy that their request was well received and that Botswana’s relevant authorities will respond to the King’s request formally after engaging internally.
Morocco is one of the countries that have shown interest in hosting the continent’s football masterpiece and will be going head to head with Algeria, Ghana, and Cameroon. The door to host the 2025 AFCON finals was re-opened after concerns were raised over the availability of infrastructure and facilities by the initial hosts Guinea, whom the African football body stripped it of its rights to host. The winning bid is expected to be announced in February 2023.
Minister for State President Hon. Kabo Morwaeng and the Deputy Permanent Secretary to the President Ms Matshidiso Bokole were also present during the courtesy call.
