The Alliance for Progressives (AP) is calling for President Masisi to step down. The AP says the President is unfit for the highest office.

His Excellency the President Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi has been accused of being “complicit and culpable” for crimes levelled against DPP.

“Above all else, the President must resign. He is complicit and culpable in these crimes by the State against its people. The Law is now being used, not to prosecute, but to persecute. There is no doubt that these were politically motivated charges aimed at embarrassing political opponents. These heinous acts of falsifying evidence were done at the behest of the Head of State with little regard to the lives that have been destroyed in the process. This disqualifies him from holding that Office. Consequently, we are calling upon him, to do the honorable thing and resign. We urge Parliament to do the right thing and immediately bring forth a motion of no confidence against the President and his Government if he fails to resign.” the AP charged.

The AP was commenting on the case of Ms. Welheminah Maswabi versus the State where the former got acquitted. A judgement by Judge Dr. Zein Kebonang acquitted and discharged Ms. Maswabi of all the charges levelled against her.

The court has ruled that the charges were fabricated and has ordered the police to open an investigation against Jako Hubona- DPP’s leading investigator in the case.

“Country has suffered irreparable harm from the Butterfly prosecution. The State has committed a criminal act as the allegations are fabricated and outright false” Judge Zein Kebonang declared.

According to the AP, this ruling by the court is welcomed as the case was politically motivated, aimed at embarrassing political opponents. The AP is of the view that the Botswana Constitution “lacks basic tenets of good governance, accountability and allows the President to do as he wishes.”
