Giving a brief background of Sasa Klass’ love for music and entertainment, Annah Mokgethi- Sasa’s mother, shed a light that Sasa’s talent was realized at a very young age, where she would win dance competitions and walk away with prizes, “Her musical talent and love for dancing became apparent at an early stage, at age 4 we happened to be shopping at woolworths shop, where there was a dancing competition for little children to win a prize. She instructed her staff to the “Makarena” song, emulating all the dance moves and she won herself a prize. When she was 9/10, we were on a holiday at Suncity and the children were called to the stage for an impromptu dance competition, she went on stage, worked her magic and won herself an all expenses paid trip to Suncity” she revealed.
Though she was academically gifted, and excelled in other extra curricullar activities like swimming, Mokgethi says that Sasa chose to quit school at Limkokwing University of Creative Technology where she was pursuing an Arts Bachelor’s Degree Honors in Film & TV Production to focus on the her music carrer. “At one stage she used to sneak out, and was very secretive about where she was going, only for me to learn that she was going to a music studio in Phase 4 where she was busy practicing and horning herself. She first came into the public scene by performing at poetry nights at a local joint called “Quest”. Her poetry became the foundation of her rapping carrer. She would spend hours locked in her room writing poetry and music. Sasa was very independent, and often made her own way, and navigating the industry without my input…. She informed me that she wants to quit school as the only way to break into the hip hop industry was when you are young, but I didn’t understand about hip hop, all I knew is if you want to make it in life, you needed a formal qualification- as we were raised, I ultimately relented and let her have her way”
Annah further described Sasa as as someone who was very good in expressing her views in a clear way, moreover, she indicates that Sasa was very humble and down to earth, contrary to what most could have perceived, taking after her grandfather Klass Van Der Westheizen whom she adopted his name and called herself “Sasa Klass”. Furthermore, she says Sasa stood firmly against gender based violence.
As Sarona “Sasa Klass” Motlhagodi was a celebrity, and her mother a public figure- the Minister of Nationality, Immigration and Gender Affairs, her send off was graced by dignitaries. Among the attendees was the first lady, ministers, fellow artists and the media. Condolences were received from embassies of India, United States of America among others, as well as from the President of Botswana, the cabinet and the ruling party.
