CONSULTANT FORENSIC PATHOLOGIST (1 POST)
Forensic Pathology is a Unit under the Forensic Science Services Branch of the Botswana Police Service. It is responsible for medicolegal investigation of deceased persons within the jurisdiction of Botswana and Botswana citizens who die outside the country.
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the above post at the Botswana Police Service on a 3 year contract (36 months). The position is tenable in Francistown.
SALARY: E.1 – (P349, 704 – P363, 848) per Annum
LEAVE: 30 working days per Annum
BENEFITS:
A renewable contract of 36 months with gratuity payable at the rate of 25% upon expiry of contract.
(i) Optional contributory Medical Aid Scheme (Government Pays 50% and employee 50%)

QUALIFICATIONS:
Medical Degree and M.D. (Master of Medicine) in Forensic Pathology or equivalent post graduate specialist training in Forensic Pathology / Medicine.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of six years experience in medicolegal work which includes performing medico legal post mortem examinations, exhumations, skeletal examinations, age estimations, and giving expect opinion in courts of law on medico – legal matters.
MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
To perform all medicolegal post mortem cases in the BPS, to give expert evidence in medicolegal cases to government and relevant stakeholders.
DUTIES
1. Performs all medicolegal post mortems in the Northern Region of Botswana.
2. Performs post mortems on all referred cases from Medical Officers in the Northern Region.
3. Prepares reports on post mortem examinations and submits them to the police and relevant stakeholders.
4. Examines skeletal remains to determine the origin, sex, age and cause of death.
5. Examines foetus for identification and to determine the cause of death.
6. Attends exhumation and performs post mortem examination on exhumed bodies.
7. Attends scenes of death in relevant cases.
8. Issues notice of death to the registrar of births and deaths after the post mortem examination
9. Issues non infections diseases certificates and completes other formalities to repatriate bodies outside the country.
10. Performs age estimation of individuals as may be directed by the court of law, or relevant authority.
11. Advises government, stakeholders and attorneys on medical aspects of law.
12. Undertakes teaching of Police Officers, State Prosecutors, and Autopsy Technicians on Medicolegal investigations and basis of Forensic Medicine.
13. Visits all mortuaries in the Northern region and examines the mortuary equipment periodically and issues new equipment or instruments as and when necessary.
14. Decides on which medicolegal investigation to be done in the country, and which to be sent outside the Country.
15. May be on call for forensic work of urgent nature.
16. Undertakes any other related duties as may be required to meet the exigencies of the services.
