Socca Moruakgomo’s Moratiwa Musical Back At Maitisong
A musical produced and directed by legendary Jazz artist Socca returned to Maitisong theater on Wednesday. The musical dubbed Morartiwa will start playing every Saturday from the 2nd of September.
Moratiwa tells Gaone’s tragic story and brings light to the practice of ritual murders in Botswana.
Through narration and song, a cast of 26 actors, dancers and singers are accompanied by a nine-piece band, performs the musical.
The musical follows the story set in the early 1980s when residents of the village of Xamshiko, Botswana held a Kgotla meeting with their leaders and police officials about the case of a missing child (Gaone), which was dismissed after the records disappeared.
It was suspected that top officials were responsible due to an upsurge in ritualistic murders in the area. The Botswana Government invited the Scotland Yard to investigate further when students of Xamshiko, joined by students of the University of Botswana, held a strike.
The musical was performed for the first time last year at Mantlwaneng Theatre in Westwood International School as part of the BOT50 celebration. Admission is P150 for adults and P75 for students with valid IDs.
