Local Athletics Team Tops The Region
Botswana athletics national team has been crowned champions at the 2017 CAA Southern region senior championships held in Harare, Zimbabwe from June 10-11.
In 2015, Botswana finished on position two after scooping five gold medals, seven silver and five bronze.
This time the local lads came with guns blazing as they won 12 gold medals, four silver and four bronze medals.
South Africa got position two with nine gold, 10 silver and five bronze medals, followed by Mozambique with two gold, two silver and three bronze medals.
Botswana made their intention clear in the 100 metres men when Karabo Mothibi scooped gold with a time of 10.29 and Loungo Matlhaku clocked 23.85 to win gold in the 200 metres event.
Botswana continued their dominance in 400 metres when Galefele Moroko won gold with 53.99 followed by Goitseone Seleka with 55.84.
In 400 metres men, it was Botswana at the podium as they scooped the three medal with Leaname Maotoanong bagging gold with 46.11, silver went to Pako Seribe with 46.47, while bronze was won by Omphemetse Poo with 46.68.
Shepherd Kenatshele increased the country’s medal tally in 800 metres with a time of 1:49.00, and Sylvester Koko did not disappoint as he delivered gold home as well with 3:54:00 1500 metres.
In 5000 metres Mema Tiango and Marea Maano won silver and bronze medal respectively.
In 110 hurdles, Kemorena Tisang won silver with a time of 14.49, and went on to win bronze in 400 m hurdles with 55.58.
In the 4×100 metres women relay Botswana recorded a new National Record (NR) of 42.04 to win a gold medal.
The men’s 4×100 metres were not left behind as they also punched an NR of 38.62 and win a gold medal.

00 metres men and women relay won gold medals, and in the field event Ruri Rammokolodi won gold with a jump of 7.52, while Gobe Takobana settled for position three in the long jump with 2.05 metres.
Athletics coach, Mogomotsi Otsetswe said he was happy with the team’s performance despite fielding their development side.
He said they had realised that there was no gap between their elite athletes and development side looking at their performance during the games.
