26 Young Batswana To Participate In The Mandela Washington Fellowship
26 young Batswana achievers have been chosen to participate in the Mandela Washington Fellowship.
Speaking during a press conference in Gaborone, the US deputy chief of mission in Botswana, Mr Timothy Smith stated that the Mandela Washington Fellowship was a flagship programme for the Young African Leaders Initiative by the US government.
Mr Smith stated that the fellowship aimed to empower young Africans to growth and prosperity, strengthen democratic governance and enhance peace and security across Africa.
He pointed out that since the establishment of the programme in 2014, 54 Batswana had already benefitted from the six weeks training programme that is offered through various universities and colleges in the US.Mr Smith said the participants would be trained in areas of business and entrepreneurship, civic leadership and public management.
He also mentioned that the fellows would convene in Washington, DC for a three days summit where they would interact with senior US government, business and civic leaders.
Mr Smith explained that young Batswana who were selected had proven record of accomplishment in leading and promoting positive change in their organisations, institutions and communities.
He pointed out that the fellowship was the beginning of a good relationship between the US and young African leaders, adding that they would be closely working with them upon their return to make sure they achieved their dreams.
He said the 2017 Fellowship, would host 1000 outstanding young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa Meanwhile, a fellow, Dr Lesego Sekele expressed excitement for being chosen.
Dr Sekele who works for the Medical Rescue Botswana said he would use the opportunity to improve his skills and knowledge.
