This is yet another year where our country fails to send a representative to Miss Universe pageant. Over 80 candidates will be competing on behalf of their countries, and we have no one who will be wearing our name. It’s been 4 years now since we have not send anyone to represent us, and that can’t be good news.
A lot of women have done a great job in representing us international beauty pageants. In 1999 Mpule Kwelagobe made history by becoming the first black African to walk away with the Miss Universe tittle, and this has been proof that we are more than capable. Emma Wareus also came in as 1st Princess at the Miss World 2010 competition, a spot that is normally far fetched for African ladies.
One can wonder if we still have Miss Universe franchise here anymore. Maybe the controversies that are forever surrounding our local pageants stop us from aiming higher. One can only hope we redeem ourselves before it’s too late. The Philippines is hosting the prestigious pageant, which has over 80 candidates from around the world.
