The arrival of the passenger train was to make travelling easier for Batswana, but this mode of transport can’t escape controversy. Just a few days after it was launched it broke down, and passengers were left stranded. As if that was not enough, Botswana Railway passenger train had yet another accident that happened Monday midnight near the Tropic of Capricon.
Several passengers were injured when the train crashed onto a loose goods train coach between Mahalapye and Dibete. Reports indicate that about 200m of rail line was destroyed in the accident. The engine man and his control crew were not aware that there was a loose coach on the track which had escaped a goods train by accident. Lives were saved because the passenger train did not overturn.
Restoration is ongoing and the train is expected to be back in operation on Wednesday evening. We are happy that there were no causalities, and the train will continue assisting customers who are up North.
