The world’s second largest diamond to be recovered in more than 100 years and the largest ever discovered in Botswana has been named Lesedi La Rona (our light). Lucara . Batswana were given the opportunity to name the 1,111 carat diamond from Karowe mine which is the biggest ever to be discovered in Botswana and the second in the world.
Many Batswana are not happy with the name as they say it’s too shallow. Some are saying it is not relevant looking at the fact that we are forever experiencing load shedding, henceforth they is nothing bright about Botswana. Only a few are happy with the name because of it’s simplicity. The name was chosen because of its meaningful explanation according to the judges.
Participants were invited to submit their suggested names for the gemstone. The winner is Thembani Moitlhobogi from Mmadikola village who will be awarded P25 000 cash this Thursday. His reasons were that the diamond is a pride, light and hope of Batswana.
