The Botswana Police Service has reported that 317 people have tragically lost their lives on the roads so far in 2024. Commissioner Dinah Marathe addressed the rising number of road accidents, noting that the festive season often sees an increase in road-related incidents.
While the statistics for this year are alarming, Commissioner Marathe highlighted a positive trend in the long-term reduction of road fatalities. In comparison to previous years, road deaths have gradually decreased: 404 lives were lost in 2021, 396 in 2022, and 355 in 2023. Despite this overall decline, the 317 fatalities recorded this year still present a significant concern as the country enters the peak of the festive season.
Marathe emphasized the importance of road safety and urged all road users to be extra cautious during this time. “As we approach the festive season, we call for heightened vigilance on our roads. Everyone has a role to play in reducing accidents. We must all be responsible on the road to prevent further loss of life,” she said.
The Commissioner stressed that while law enforcement continues to tackle road safety, the responsibility also lies with drivers, pedestrians, and all road users to adhere to traffic laws, avoid reckless driving, and ensure that they are alert behind the wheel.
In addition to the police’s efforts to maintain road safety, public awareness campaigns will be ramped up in the coming weeks to remind citizens about safe driving practices. The police service is also stepping up patrols, particularly during the holiday season, to reduce the risk of accidents and ensure that road users remain vigilant.
As the country continues to see a decline in road fatalities over the years, it is clear that concerted efforts from both the police and the public are necessary to further reduce the loss of life on the roads. However, it remains imperative for everyone to take responsibility for their actions behind the wheel and remain mindful of the safety of others on the road.
