The Extension II Magistrate’s Court has found 22-year-old Gosego Masisi guilty of cruel treatment and punishment of a minor after he brutally assaulted a 13-month-old baby with a plastic pipe. The guilty verdict, delivered by Magistrate Keabetswe Majuta, followed the presentation of evidence by the prosecution.

The incident occurred on November 27, 2024, when Masisi, who was in a relationship with the child’s mother, inflicted severe injuries on the infant. Masisi had been living with the mother, who was pregnant with the child when their relationship began.

During the court proceedings, State Prosecutor Simon Galebonwe submitted key evidence, including the medical report of the injured child and the plastic pipe used in the assault. Galebonwe outlined how Masisi’s actions caused grievous harm to the child, emphasizing the senseless nature of the attack.

Masisi, in his testimony, admitted to committing the act, stating, “It is true that it was on November 27 last year, and I know the child through the mother I was dating.” When asked by the Magistrate why he would harm a 13-month-old with a plastic pipe, Masisi admitted he could not explain his actions, further confirming that he acted voluntarily.

Magistrate Majuta, convinced beyond a reasonable doubt of Masisi’s guilt, declared, “I am satisfied that the accused is guilty, so he is guilty as charged.” However, the sentencing was postponed to allow the prosecution to investigate whether Masisi has any prior convictions.

The court is set to reconvene on February 17, 2025, for the prosecution to present its findings, after which mitigation arguments will be heard, followed by sentencing.

The case has sparked public outrage, with many calling for stricter penalties for those found guilty of child abuse. It also underscores the urgent need to address child protection and the safety of minors in domestic settings. The community awaits the final sentence, hoping it serves as a deterrent to such heinous acts.
