The Botswana Examinations Council (BEC) has released the 2024 Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) examination results. Speaking at a press conference today, BEC board chairperson Dr. Olefile Molwane provided a detailed analysis of the performance of candidates across the country.

Dr. Molwane revealed that a total of 36,917 candidates registered for the 2024 examinations, marking a slight increase from the 36,562 candidates in 2023. Of this number, 22,199 were female, while 14,718 were male.

Announcing the performance breakdown, Dr. Molwane noted that:

  • 96.24% of candidates attained a grade G or better, an improvement from 95.80% in 2023.
  • 74.77% secured a grade E or better, slightly lower than 75.00% in the previous year.
  • 31.35% achieved a grade C or better, compared to 32.30% in 2023.
  • 2.84% attained a grade A or better, a decrease from 3.70% in 2023.

The results indicate a mixed performance trend, with slight improvements in lower grades but a decline in higher grades. Dr. Molwane emphasized that while access to education continues to expand, there is a need for renewed efforts to improve overall performance, particularly at higher-grade levels.

As students, parents, and educators reflect on the results, attention is expected to turn toward strategies to enhance academic performance in future examinations.
