2016 Fallen Heroes Day Commemorates Those Who Died In Line Of Duty
A hero is someone who is recognized for doing something outstanding, thus they need to be commended. The commemoration of the Fallen Heroes Day began on 27th February 2011, to remember the 15 BDF members who were killed during the Lesoma Ambush on 27th February 1978 by the Rhodesian Regime. The Commemoration was held at the Extension 14 Cemetery where the 15 Lesoma Ambush victims were laid to rest and at the time was called Lesoma Commemoration.
Following the initial commemoration, a deliberate decision was taken to recognize other fallen heroes who met their demise in their line of duty such as Peace Support Operations, Inter Regional Deployments, local deployments and training. The name was then changed to Fallen Heroes Day.
The sacrifices made by the fallen heroes are commemorated, lived and highlighted in everyday BDF activities to recognize the sacrifices made in the past and which will be made in the future in defense of our country.
This year’s heroes day will be celebrated on Friday 26 February 2016.
