10 Things You Didn’t Know About DJ Sid

He is known as the most carefree person in the whole of Botswana. Behind that playful character lies a man with many talents and vast experience in our entertainment industry.  Sid does so much when it comes to advocating for local content in our broadcasters. He does this fearlessly yet maintaining his wit. A lot can be said about this radio mogul and businessman, the following 10 facts about him are just a few.

1. Sid is a 50-year-old Sociology graduate from Howard University in Washington DC and a Gaborone Central resident for over 40 years.

2. Sidney Baitsile is also a club DJ, radio and media personality, expert and creative performing arts advocate.

3. Upon finishing his studies and coming home, he immediately contacted RB1 in search of a job and was turned down not once but three times.

4. Sid became the first voice to go on air on the RBII station upon its opening on April 6, 1992 and hosted the breakfast show for the next five years.

5. He quickly moved up to become the station’s Program Manager. His last two years on the station, was on the afternoon show.

6. A man of vast experience and talent, he was instrumental in the setting up of Gabz Fm. He went on to become the station’s first program manager in 2000.

7. He then moved to The Voice Newspaper, where his column DJ Sid’s Big Weekend, helped grow the papers brand big time.

8. He is one of the founding judges for Botswana Television’s My Star program and left the show in 2014 after 7 years.

9. During the show, DJ Sid was known for his controversial comments about which a lot of people thought were rude, especially when a contestant did not sing well.

10. His announcement in 2014 that he was running as an independent candidate for Gaborone Central was greeted with derision by almost everybody. We admire his character for challenging big established names in the political circle.
