10 Things You Didn’t Know About Benson Phuthego.

Benson Phuthego, a former news reader,  is a man of many talents, and a master of them all, from theater performance, poetry recitation, marimba player and commercial jingles. He is a multi -tasking individual who has perfected his skills in being a folklore musician with two albums under his belt titled Life and Jive Africa. Read below to know more about this talented artist.

1. Benon Phuthego was raised in the semi urban location of Tlokweng. In his own admission, Phuthego was raised under a strict and cultured setup that gave him strong moral principles and survival skills.

2. Prior to his fond and memorable stint on TV, Benson was on radio, as a newsreader, for a period spanning almost 5 years. He landed on TV when he applied in reply to an advertisement at the time, and he was the darling o Batswana.

3. At this time Benson was also First National Bank’ Head of Service, a job that he left after he was in financial scandals that saw him all over the papers.

4. He ventured into logistics and ran a booming truck business.  But it is this business that messed things up for him, he has now overcome the financial problems though , which went public and threw him in the gutter.

5. He left the corporate deals and went into a recording studio where he did a dedication poem for Zebras during its maiden encounter in the AFCON finals. A week later there were more poems and an album was finalized. He titled his first album Life.

6. The album was well recieved and he was announced the winner of the Best New Comer and Best Folklore awards in the 2012 Botswana Musicians Awards (BOMU).

7. On what inspires his songs, Phuthego says it always occurs unplanned, in most cases at night when he is unable to sleep. He writes poems and songs that are of exhortations and somehow folkloric because they relate to the lives of people.

8. He mentions stars of legendary Radio Botswana’s folklore program Dipina Le Maboko like Ponatshego Mokane, Ratsie Setlhako, and Sekokota Kaboyamodimo as his local inspirations.

9. Benson got his break in the short role of a charismatic MC on the No1 Ladies Detective agency movie, along side Jill Scott. It was a short role, but the impact was huge.

10. This hunky father of one is yet to marry.
