GABORONE, 15th January 2024: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to announce that His Excellency Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi, President of the Republic of Botswana, has appointed Mr. Tebelelo Alfred Boang, Ambassador of the Republic of Botswana to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union (AU).

Ambassador-Designate Boang is a seasoned career diplomat with over twenty years experience in the Foreign Service. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1991 as a Foreign Affairs Officer and rose through the ranks serving in different capacities at the Botswana Diplomatic Missions abroad and at Headquarters. In his most recent portfolio, as the Director for the Department of Europe and the Americas, he has played a key role promoting relations between Botswana and countries in the Americas and Europe, as well as with the European Union and the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States.

His other roles at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, included serving with the Permanent Mission of Botswana to the United Nations in New York, where he covered international peace and security issues including during Botswana’s tenure as a Non-Permanent Member of the UN Security Council (1995-1996). He was also engaged with matters pertaining to the work of the Africa Group and the Non-Aligned Movement at the UN.

In addition to serving with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador-Designate Boang has also worked as a Political Affairs Officer with the United Nations focussing on peacekeeping issues in Somalia, Eritrea and Ethiopia.

As Botswana’s Envoy in Addis Ababa, Ambassador-Designate Boang is expected to among others, be instrumental in facilitating Botswana’s contributions to the Continental development agenda including the transformative AU Agenda 2063 which seeks to realise β€œan integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa.”

Ambassador-Designate Boang will take up his appointment in February 2024.
